I want to evoke emotion amongst observers and for them to acknowledge the female gaze present in the work. With each of my paintings demonstrating this defiant gaze, I hope to replicate a feeling of empowerment and strength.

I am interested in researching the male gaze, in which the male depicts the female as a sexual object for pleasure. I strive to defer from traditional male ‘masters’ painting females. Illustrating the confident female gaze in modern day, whilst demonstrating the absurdity of the male gaze.

My current work explores the female gaze in modern society and today’s situation, coronavirus, where screens, media and self-awareness are ever present. I wanted to represent women in their truest form, unfiltered, real, from all angles using fleshy tones and passionate brushstrokes to truly reflect identity whilst previously recognising cameras distorting the female form. I use acrylic on canvas because I enjoy the roughness of the paint.

The models I use in my work are from my recent online life drawing classes, each wishing to show comfortable, strong bodies, not fitting in with the stereotypical ‘perfect’ body often advertised. Firstly, reflecting internally looking at my own body and acceptance.

Inspired by Jenny Saville, as nothing is off limits, I have shown the ‘woman’s truth’, the unfiltered self and the imagery you wouldn’t normally see in popular culture. I was also inspired by Celia Hempton and her attempt to flip the male gaze onto the male, recently painting males objectified through chat rooms.

Rwyf am sbarduno emosiwn ymhlith y gynulleidfa a gwneud iddynt gydnabod yr edrychiad benywaidd yn y gwaith. Mae pob un o’m paentiadau yn dangos yr edrychiad herfeiddiol hwn, a gobeithiaf ail-greu ymdeimlad o rym a chryfder.

Mae gen i ddiddordeb mewn ymchwilio i’r edrychiad gwrywaidd, lle mae’r dyn yn portreadu’r fenyw fel gwrthrych rhywiol sy’n rhoi pleser. Rwy’n anelu at osgoi ‘meistri’ gwrywaidd traddodiadol yn paentio menywod. Dangosir yr edrychiad benywaidd hyderus yn y byd modern, a dangosir hefyd wiriondeb yr edrychiad gwrywaidd.

Mae fy ngwaith ar hyn o bryd yn archwilio’r edrychiad benywaidd yn y gymdeithas fodern a’r hyn sy’n digwydd heddiw, y coronafeirws, lle mae sgriniau, y cyfryngau a hunanymwybyddiaeth i’w gweld ym mhob man. Roeddwn i am ddangos menywod fel y maent go iawn, heb ffilter, o bob ongl gan ddefnyddio lliwiau cnawdol a strociau brws cryf, er mwyn adlewyrchu hunaniaeth go iawn wrth gydnabod yn flaenorol gamerâu sy’n gwyrdroi’r corff benywaidd. Rwy’n defnyddio acrylig ar gynfas am fy mod i’n mwynhau natur garw’r paent.

Mae’r modelau rwy’n eu defnyddio yn fy ngwaith o’m dosbarthiadau bywluniadu ar-lein diweddar, a’r dyhead yw dangos cyrff cryf a chyfforddus bob amser, nad ydynt yn cyfateb i’r corff ‘perffaith’ ystrydebol a hysbysebir yn aml. Yn gyntaf, myfyrio’n fewnol gan edrych ar fy nghorff fy hun a’i dderbyn.

Rwyf wedi cael fy ysbrydoli gan Jenny Saville, am nad oes unrhyw derfynau, ac wedi dangos ‘gwirionedd y fenyw’, yr hunan heb ffilter a’r delweddau na fyddech yn eu gweld fel arfer mewn diwylliant poblogaidd. Gwnaeth Celia Hempton fy ysbrydoli i hefyd gyda’i hymgais i newid yr edrychiad gwrywaidd i fod ar y gwryw. Yn ddiweddar gwnaeth baentio dynion a oedd wedi’u gwrthrycholi drwy ystafelloedd sgwrsio.

In the series “defiant”, my paintings aim to demonstrate the female gaze in modern day.

Through screens and lenses I have captured women being strong and confident. From researching the male gaze, the act of depicting women, I was disturbed and wanted to reclaim women’s bodies and show empowerment through these life models. I wish to display the female form with no filter, no airbrush, the women’s truth. Portraying lumps, bumps, flab, sag, stretch marks, loose skin, wrinkles, dimples and so on. Everything that is natural in the female form, but what society may deem as “imperfections”.

By the female starring defiantly at the observer, she is displaying comfort in her own skin and showing beauty. I have captured the poses through screens, lenses and zoom calls in lockdown. My art shows an essence of screens and the female being self- aware in a subtle way. The aim of the artwork is to reclaim the female form by using the female gaze. Having had “masters” influence the way we view the female form, I as a female artist wish to show the true female.
