Organic painting close up

I am interested in senses and perception, objective and personal reality, the relation between the self and the natural environment. My artwork is an attempt to explore the connection between them: I am curious about the process itself.

I am interested in the transition, the moment of the in-between stage, how the objective, neutral environment becomes my own through the filter of consciousness. Our perception is unreliable: the objective reality seeps through on our mind, body and becomes something different influenced and transformed by emotions, memories, expectations, imagination, knowledge and so on.

My recent acrylic and watercolour painting are inspired by the artists Elizabeth Magill,Christopher Le Brun, Brendan Stuart Burns, and philosopher Merleau-Ponty. Through texture and abstraction, I attempt to find the thin and fragile boundary between the detached, objective landscape and the perceived sensation: I take my own perceived experience apart, skeletonize it layer by layer, removing all the obvious, visible and tangible element, leaving the pure sensation behind, just to rebuild and depict it to its scaffolds. In that way, I can experience the true meaning of places by finding and understanding the role of the self through the process of perception.

In my work I question the role of the self within this process. The landscape we see exist in fusion with the sensation we experience, it cannot be separable: the landscape always and inseparably involves the self. The landscape I paint is this unseen, liminal space between the objective and my own personal. I also aim to challenge the viewers to think about their relationship to their environment, to question their own belongings to places.

Rwy’n artist gweledol o Gymru. Mae gen i ddiddordeb yn y synhwyrau a chanfyddiad, realiti personol a gwrthrychol, a’r berthynas rhwng yr hunan a’r amgylchedd naturiol. Drwy fy ngwaith rwy’n ceisio archwilio’r cysylltiad rhyngddynt: mae gen i ddiddordeb yn y broses ei hun; sut mae ein synhwyrau a’n canfyddiad yn ein helpu i ddehongli’r byd.

Mae gen i ddiddordeb yn y cyfnod pontio a’r ffordd mae’r amgylchedd niwtral, gwrthrychol yn dod yn fy un i drwy hidlydd y gydwybod. Nid yw ein canfyddiad yn ddibynadwy: mae ein realiti gwrthrychol yn dylanwadu ar ein meddwl a’n corff, ac mae’n dod yn rhywbeth gwahanol y mae emosiynau, atgofion, disgwyliadau, y dychymyg, gwybodaeth ac ati yn dylanwadu arno ac yn ei drawsnewid.  Mae’r dirwedd a welaf yn bodoli ar y cyd â’r hyn a deimlaf; ni ellir eu gwahanu: mae’n ymwneud â’r hunan bob tro. Mae’r dirwedd rwy’n ei phaentio yn lle trothwyol, nas gwelir rhwng y gwrthrychol a’r personol.

Mae fy mhaentio acrylig a dyfrlliw diweddar wedi’i ysbrydoli gan yr artistiaid Elizabeth Magill, Christopher Le Brun, Elfyn Lewis a’r athronydd Merleu-Ponty. Drwy wead ac echdynnu, rwy’n ceisio dod o hyd i’r ffin denau a bregus rhwng y dirwedd wrthrychol sydd ar wahân a’r teimlad canfyddedig: rwy’n dadelfennu fy mhrofiad canfyddedig i, yn ei sgerbydu haen wrth haen, gan gael gwared ar yr holl elfennau amlwg, gweladwy, y gellir eu dirnad, a gadael y teimlad pur ar ôl, er mwyn ei ailadeiladu o’r bôn i’r brig. Drwy wneud hyn, gallaf brofi gwir ystyr y dirwedd drwy ganfod a deall rôl yr hunan yn y broses o greu canfyddiad.
