Following an interest within the digital documentation of paleontology, my practice explores the translation between the physical and digital through scanning, layering, and fragmentation. My work is influenced by both technology and the natural world due to the correlation between methods of construction to create forms throughout both fields. Key features of my work consist of scanning, photography, lighting, layering, and deconstruction which I view as important factors connecting the physical to the digital, creating an exploration of this relationship and how this can become disrupted as it transitions between forms.

An important aspect of my work is the medium in which it is created due to the effect it has on the imagery and its translation into a digital representation. Clear acrylic is a prime material due to its transparent characteristic which allows me to encase images within the layers to create an internally suspended form. The transparency creates an artificial space in which the object exists, reflecting the digital space of a scan. Light refraction has become a relevant aspect of my work due to its fragmenting and pixelating qualities, and importance within scanning and photography, further connecting to the digital world.

Alongside the translation of form, the translation of word has become a relevant factor within the exploration of this field. Understanding the use and meaning of the word ‘site’ and its correlation between a physical and a digital site has become an important influence within the direction of my work and its presentation to the audience.

Yn sgil diddordeb yn nogfennaeth ddigidol paleontoleg, mae fy ngwaith yn archwilio’r trosi rhwng y ffisegol a’r digidol drwy sganio, haenu a darnio. Mae technoleg a’r byd naturiol yn dylanwadu ar fy ngwaith oherwydd y berthynas rhwng dulliau adeiladu i greu ffurfiau yn y ddau faes. Ymhlith nodweddion allweddol fy ngwaith mae sganio, ffotograffiaeth, goleuo, haenu, a dadelfennu sydd, yn fy marn i, yn ffactorau pwysig sy’n cysylltu’r ffisegol a’r digidol, gan greu ffordd o archwilio’r berthynas hon a sut y gellir amharu arni wrth drosi rhwng y ddwy ffurf.

Agwedd bwysig ar fy ngwaith yw’r modd y caiff ei greu oherwydd yr effaith a gaiff ar y delweddau, a’i drosi’n gynrychioliad digidol. Mae acrylig clir yn brif ddeunydd am ei fod yn dryloyw, sy’n fy ngalluogi i ymgorffori delweddau yn yr haenau er mwyn creu ffurf grog fewnol. Mae’r tryloywder yn creu man artiffisial lle mae’r gwrthrych yn bodoli, gan adlewyrchu man digidol sgan.

Mae plygiant golau wedi dod yn agwedd berthnasol ar fy ngwaith, oherwydd ei nodweddion darniog a phicselaidd, a’i bwysigrwydd o ran sganio a ffotograffiaeth, sy’n cysylltu â’r byd digidol ymhellach. Ynghyd â throsi ffurf, mae trosi gair wedi dod yn ffactor perthnasol wrth archwilio’r maes hwn. Mae deall ystyr y gair ‘safle’ a’r defnydd ohono, a’i berthynas â safle ffisegol a digidol, wedi cael dylanwad pwysig ar gyfeiriad fy ngwaith a’r ffordd y caiff ei gyflwyno i’r gynulleidfa.
